Feminist

Are you a feminist? And what exactly does that mean to you?

I have always considered myself a feminist. The other day a good friend, called me a feminist and made it sound dirty. I was offended. But, I don't really know why, because I am a feminist.

She told me some of the things I say are extreme. I don't know what that means. I am racking my brain to think of what I have said that might be extreme. Is being a feminist mean that you are extreme? Extremely what? Can a stay at home housewife and mother be a feminist? I guess so. Does that make me less of a wife, less of a mother?

No, it doesn't make you less of a wife or mother. I think it makes you *more* of a wife and a mother.

To me, a feminist believes that it is a woman's perogative to live her life as she pleases, reguardless of what society and history (and husbands) dictate. I'm a feminist.

And I've heard lots of people make it sound like a dirty word. At which point, I think of them as lowly Stepford Wives.

I could go on and on about this forever. Feminism is very close to my heart. It means that you expect to be treated equally to all other people in every avenue of life and that you demand equality for everyone, regardless of sex, sexual orientation, race, religion and age. Feminism is not just about women, it is about equality. It includes all the "isms" not just sexism.

This is just a brief explanation about something that I could write a 50 page essay about.

Sorry it's so choppy.

Also, as a side note, I am both a mother to two children and a wife to a wonderful husband and a radical feminist.

Hello!
Feminism is most times misunderstood. Like when a person labels another a "Feminist", it sometimes sound like she is so headstrong, uncompromising and refuses common sense just to make sure that she "gets" her way. Now, this is unfair. I think feminism is believing that you are a person born with the same rights as anyone else, no matter the gender. But with this "right" comes also "responsibility" and common sense.
