stresses

Slowly but surely I am trying to catch up in school. I have gotten so far behind. It is very stressful. I don't do stress well.

Searching for a house is turning out to be very difficult. There are literally hundreds for sale in the general area in our price range, it should be easy. However, it sucks. After seeing what happened during Hurricane Katrina, it seems obvious that we should buy a home as far inland as possible. Right? Nothing that was flooded during that hurricane or any other. Right? There is a slight problem, all the houses that we want to buy are close to the ocean. We want Mandy and Lily to go to a good school, those schools are for the people living in houses practically on the beach. Plus, there is the commute thing. Do we want Jeff to have an hour commute? He already works ungodly hours here with a 10 minute commute. Add an extra 2 hours per day to him being gone.

Mostly I just feel so frustrated. We did find this lovely house, well it was lovely on the Internet. Big, beautiful, good schools, good commute, never flooded, however - one of Jeff's co-workers took a look and said the area was icky and run down. Part of me thinks, who cares if the neighbors mow their lawns or if the neighborhood is rundown and the house is old, who cares. Good schools, good commute, no flood. I guess now I have to add to the list neighbors who mow? Is that an important indication of their good neighborliness? Do your neighbors mow? Does your neighborhood ever look rough?

I better get my nose back in the books.

PS Lily is so potty trained! She came and got me while she was playing at an indoor play area, way up in the slide, she came and got me and told me to take her to the potty. Where she actually pooped, in a public restroom. So proud. Maybe someday I will let her out of the crib. Not!

and here's where i sound like a snob...

living in a neighborhood where people take pride of their home ownership is really important. having good schools and not getting flooded is not enough. you want the value of your property to increase or at least stay the same, not go down.

to me, it would be more important to live in a neighborhood where people take pride of the property than whether or not the area got flooded. you'll need flood insurance either way. and anytime talk of a hurricane comes you pack up and go north.

i really like my neighborhood and people do a fairly good job of maintaining it. and the ones that don't really get on my nerves.

Personally I kind of like living in a neighborhood where people are too busy or too involved in their lives to give a shit about their lawn. I like a little roughness and naturalness around me. Living on a block where everyone is into competetive yard maintenance is hell, as far as I'm concerned.

Everyone is giving you great advice. The look of the neighborhood is important. Wait until you get there. You will find a house. Also, don't worry about if it flooded or not. You will have to pay flood insurance more than likely, which by the way is not cheap. Keep in mind that is part of your monthly morgage payment. Also where are you looking? An hour commute to the base? I would not worry about it until you get there and can see all the areas yourself. It is nice to be close to the base. Focus on school for now and then worry about the house later. You can always rent for a year so that you can get a feel for the area. Congrats on the potty training. Jake is starting to mention it once in a while. We are really going to focus on it over the holidays when school is out. Hopefully he will get into it. I am tired of diapers. Now go and study!

Congrats on the potty training!!!

LOL and when they can get out of the crib, you turn it upside down. Yes. Really. Somewhere in my past I met a mom who had a climber who would climb out of bed and not come get them but do other dangerous things instead. So. There ya go.

About the house thing ... personally, I think home ownership is over-rated! Def I'd rent until I knew for a fact you'd be staying put for more than five years and that the community is stable. Communities change and unless you live in an area or have a very reputable reference ... there's no way of knowing which way things are really going.

But if you're determined ... yes, stick close to your husband's work. Get videos if you can. you know the whole 360.

In your situation, I'd find a very reputable home inspector to work with. There might be one who would give you a price break according to the number of inspections accomplished ... or maybe they have a "walk through" lite-version ... but in that area ... i imagine they're ALL busy and getting top dollar ... but it's worth making phone calls.

If you aren't already using Skype or a similar product, I think you're going to need it over these next few months!

hang in there!

hugs,
pam

The hurricane thing would not be on the list of my top concerns. School and neighborhood would be.

But that's just me!

And yay for Lily!
