Question # 22

Why do you think that Pete is attracted to Harriet? What about her is appealing to others around her, both male and female? Do you think that Harriet is persuaded to stay in New Orleans with him by the end of the novel? Why or why not?

I think she goes back home and runs into the tomato-stand guy again, and they live happily ever after. :)

What about Pete? I think people like Harriet because she is dependable and doesn't make waves. I think that when people have a lot of grief in their lives or a lot of turmoil they enjoy friends and people who do not bring to the table any conflict. Harriet is non-confrontational, doesn't have any problems or drama, never complains. To people who are on high stress all the time this would be a calming thing.
