The novel features excerpts of Baby's poetry and Anna's romance novels. What does the inclusion of this writing add to your understanding of both these characters? Why don't you see passages by Courtney, Catherine and Harriet? What do you imagine that their writing would be like?
I Think I May Have A Screw Loose

I saw my podiatrist yesterday. One part of my foot is still hurting (it's
been almost two months since the surgery). He thinks it may be one of the
screws ...

I usually don't read poetry in books, choosing to skip over it instead. This time I forced myself to read the poems and I actually really enjoyed most of them. I think she did a great job making them seem to come from Baby.
I also enjoyed the romance novel excerpts, but got confused by them sometimes -- not being able to tell which was "real" (as being written) and which was "fake" (as in a fantasy of Anna's that she was either living out or just imagining in her mind. For instance, what was that whole thing going on at the very end? Was there something physically going on with the freckle-boy and Anna? That part confused me. I'm easily confused.
Baby's poetry was quite illuminating as a picture of her inner pshycology. She was far and away the most complex and tangible character in this book, even though it was her death that brought them back together.
I thought that part about Anna sleeping with the cabin boy was confusing too, I think it was her imagination but not 100% sure. Baby's poems and Anna's romance novels did give a lot of insite into their characters.
I love a good romance novel but Anna seemed to have sold her soul to the devil in order to make a profit and be taken seriously.
