I believe that Lily has conspired with Martians to such my brain out my ear. Here is an example of a typical conversation between Lily and I.
This conversation circled for about an hour. No matter how hard I tried I could not get her to stop asking me what WHY starts with and why does WHY start with W. I felt like saying WHY starts with Y, now leave me alone. Go play outside. Please stop asking me questions. But, I am afraid by then my brain had oozed out my ear and was sitting in a puddle on the floor.
- Lily:
- What does WHY start with?
- Mommy:
- The word WHY starts with the letter W. The word WHY is spelled W-H-Y. Can you spell the word WHY?
- Lily:
- W-H-Y. What does WHY start with?
- Mommy:
- WHY starts with W. There is a word WHY and a letter Y. The word WHY starts with W and ends with Y.
- Lily:
- What does WHY start with?
- Mommy:
- I already told you what WHY starts with, what does WHY start with?
- Lily:
- WHY starts with W, Why does WHY start with W?
- Mommy:
- WHY is a word which is spelled W-H-Y, therefore it starts with W. Just like the word YOU starts with Y, the word YOU is spelled Y-O-U. Can you spell the word YOU?
- Lily:
- Y-O-U, what does WHY start with
- Mommy:
- WHY starts with W.
- Lily:
- Why does WHY start with W?

I love this story--one every parent must suffer. My favorite answer, "just because."
My answer was always something like, "Because it does, but I don't know why." Although because that sentence contains the word "why" the answer probably would have started Lily off on another round of questioning. :) I've often wondered these things myself -- why does why start with w -- does that even make sense?
I think I would have asked her "W-H-Y do you ask?"
I've often wondered why "why" starts with a 'w' and not a 'y'. I mean 'a' starts and ends with 'a', and 'I' starts and ends with 'I', so really it goes to follow that 'why' would start and end with the letter 'y'...then again, 'Who's on first?" lol In case you didn't read my comment from the other day, you have been given an award;~)
I can't wait until I can have these conversations with my little boy. His most sophisticated sentence right now is "GO!"
I think I'm with Sheila, on these endless questions from young children...'just because' fit the the bill when the questions just went on too long!
See- moms have patience! If we didn't the entire human race would be wiped out!
HA! we must live on the same planet.
