Evacuation kit

All day I have been preparing for a hurricane. Now it appears we are just going to have a good storm. I am new to tropical weather terminology but I am pretty certain that is what is going on. Today at the Wal-Mart, which is usually pretty quiet at 10AM, it was totally packed, all the parking spaces were filled all the shopping carts gone, the lines were half way down the isles.

While I was standing in line, buying my emergency food supplies, I couldn't help but notice what the other people had in their buggies (shopping carts to you Yankees). I saw a lot of salsa, chips, beer, water, dog food, and paper towels. I didn't get any of those things, I am thinking I am not prepared. I almost got out of line.

I filled the car with gas, got some money, planed my escape route. Now I have to take with me two kids, a cat, a dog, extra gas, important papers, and....

What would you bring if you had to evacuate and you only had a little bit of room left in your tiny little car? I was thinking maybe the dog and cat could ride out the storm and I could take more stuff. Ha, ha just kidding. But, seriously what would you take? Your favorite jeans, some pictures, baby books, wedding album, jewelry, favorite book?

My Jeff comes home tomorrow, can you tell he has been out of town?

MY COMPUTER!

Let us pray that none of us ever have to go through that!

Two years ago when we first moved here we were hit with 3 storms, Katrina being one of them. Nothing like a housewarming party as hurricanes. Did you get a generator yet?

Computer, that is a good idea. No, generator we are too cheap.

I think I would grab pictures, and that's it. Besides the dogs (I guess). Pictures can't be replaced, but pretty much everything else can.

computer and pictures, good ideas. maybe an ice chest full of diet coke?

I used to hate this question. The preachers would ask this, and of course, the right answer was "my bible." Which I could never understand. Unless you live in some odd third world country, you can ALWAYS get a bible.

(I like my bible, and I like having my familiar underlinings, but it's not one of the things I would risk my life saving. Unless I lived in the aforementioned third world country, or communist Russia.)

OH-- I forgot to mention that the preachers were talking about a fire or some other disaster where you would lose everything else. I guess that's what your question made me think of. As far as what to save in an evacuation, that would depend on circumstances.

well maybe not your whole computer but at the least your hard drive. I would also want to take my awards and my kids awards and pictures of course. Although I have my photos in a huge tupperware container that is supposed to be air tight.

Glad to hear the storm is not expected to be too bad. It always surprises me what people get at the stores. When we lived in Houston, we only got a couple of scares--the most troubling was when I was within two weeks of delivering my second son. I guess I would take my computer or at least a back up of what's on it.

Well, I would wear all my jewellery (I don't have much), take my laptop (which conveniently has my entire music collection stored on it) and my pictures.

I would be very sad to leave my books behind (especially my encyclopedias and dictionaries), but they're replaceable. (Maybe I should just buy electronic dictionaries and encyclopedias and store them on my computer, too...)

Mama Huebert, thanks for stopping by, I was only asking to make sure I wasn't forgetting anything, I would hate to have to answer a question like that and then have my answer evaluated, not the kind of test I could pass.

Angel, Awards, that is a good one. You have to blog about all your awards and your kids' awards, these are things inquiring minds want to know.

Shelia, these storms scare me too. We lived in Indiana for awhile and the tornado's scared me there, and in Japan the earthquakes scared me and in Italy the terrorists scared me. I see a pattern. Memory stick, good idea.

Princess cat's Pajama's, books- how I love my books. I am jealous of your encyclopedias, I love them and Almanacs are my favorites, I collect them and maps. I know, I am a bit odd.

What about important legal papers? pictures, memory stick and excellent idea, camera, journal and fountain pen, address book......but the first thing I thought of was the little gold mouse pin with it's wiggly tail and ruby eyes that my son gave me one Christmas. And if I had enough room I would bring the watercolor and other paintings I've done. If I had enough time I would take them out of their frames. The thought of this is making me panicy. Their have recently been a lot of people in a 200 mile radius of us who have had to evacuate their homes because of fire. Not likely for us, but still.

an excellent idea, not and!

scary stuff, isn't it? all that running around and usually it's nothing, but you still have to do all the running around just in case.

if you get stuck in the house for a while without electricity, you definitely want the chips, but the beer will be warm soon enough.

i can't leave without two pictures: one of my mother sleeping next to me as a newborn, and one of my father with me at age 2 play shaving with him.

my 3 cats, my laptop, and some clothes.

And maybe a deck of cards.

Two years ago, we had huge fires near where we live, and were awaken at 2 am by the sheriff knocking on our door suggesting that we evacuate. Grabbed: people, pet, medicine, change of clothing, pictures, important papers (especially the insurance papers), the tower for the computer, jewelry. We didn't end up evacuating, but the car was packed just in case. Afterward, I looked at all of the stuff that I didn't pack, and wondered why I think that it is all so important.

I am so lucky to live in South Africa where we do have floods or droughts but no hurricanes or tornadoes.

Hope everything goes well for you ...and the pets :)

Well, after my family and the dog (for some reason, I kept typing God there instead of dog) I have one folder in my filing cabinet I'd grab. I'd maybe grab the laptop. But really, if I were dressed and had my kids and husband and dog with me, that would be all I'd worry about.

That's with no advance warning, anyway. If I had longer to plan, maybe I'd take more.

oh and my purse, because it has my wallet and phone, which would be good to have.
