The thing I think all the girls have in common is loneliness. None of them was lonely on the first trip down the river, now they all feel isolated and alone. I think that Baby is the emotional center of the book. It was their connection to and the time spent with Baby that brought them back together, otherwise they would be like the other girls at the end of the book, having left that part of their lives behind.
